Elder Mission at Wakefield Baptist Church

Elder Mission has emerged at Wakefield Baptist Church from an interest in providing outreach to elders and the potential of elders ministering to other elders in our community.

An Elder Mission Team of six members from the congregation meets monthly to plan events and address needs.

Elder Mission Facilitator. Linda  serves in this part-time position which is made possible by a grant from the Baptist Home of Rhode Island.

Lunch with a Bunch

Lunch with a Bunch takes place on the third Thursday of the month September through May, except in January. Each gathering consists of a healthy simple meal along with directed conversation, recognition of birthdays, and varied program presentations.

Lunch with a Bunch begins at 11:45 a.m. All are welcome. We ask that you phone the church office at 783-2472 to indicate you plan to attend, or sign up on the bulletin board at the church. Donations are accepted to help with meal costs.

Volunteers prepare and serve the meal. Volunteers are welcome. Speak to Linda to indicate how you might like to help.

 Elders Engaged in Mission

  • Food Delivery – Another aspect of Elder Mission is delivering food for the Jonnycake Center’s community food pantry to elders who are unable to go to the pantry to pick up food. Wakefield Baptist provides the drivers/delivery persons on the first, second and fifth Fridays of the month. These volunteers are screened by the local Southern RI Volunteer Services, including a BCI check.
  • Substitute drivers are often needed. Contact Linda  if you are interested in this volunteer opportunity.
  • Volunteers provide transportation to worship and other church activities, and provide transportation to doctor appointments.
  • Provide a meal for folks having a special need. Do this on your own, or join a cooking group that gathers periodically in the church kitchen.
  • Prayer Shawl Ministry. We are hoping to re-start a Prayer Shawl Ministry. Join with others to fellowship and knit or crochet together or at home. If you want to learn how to knit, let us know! This ministry provides a tangible expression of love and caring for those celebrating a new birth, for a time of struggle, for a time of grief.
